“IN AIR/UNDERWATER”

‘In Air/Underwater,’ Oil on canvas, 36″ x 24″
I created this painting after a sustained period when I felt like I was lacking a sense of groundedness. The sense of having a split self inspired the idea of a dual portrait. One figure is above ground – the conscious; another is underwater – the subconscious. Both sides seek to reconcile with the other but both are suspended in their respective settings. With this painting, I wanted to communicate the distance I felt between how I was in day-to-day life and how I was authentically.

“ALSTROEMERIA AND A MILLION STARS”

‘Alstroemeria and a Million Stars,’ Oil on canvas, 14″ x 11″
This painting was a birthday gift for my mother, who picked out the bouquet that’s depicted. It was also a helpful exercise in still life painting, since the subjects’ varying textures allowed me to practice different techniques and focus on small details.
