Pictures That Make Me Happy
Pictures that make me happy because they remind me of a really good day.
“Think of the Hieroglyphics!”
YEAR: 2019 (age 22)
My auntie Anita took this picture when my mother and I visited her in Ubud over the summer. The three of us went to a nearby forest then hiked a trail that had nearly grown over with vines and leaves larger than faces. Auntie knew her way around. When we got to the entrance of a cave, I got spooked out while she went right in, looking for bats. I said I’d stay outside. Then she told me that from where she was standing, she could take a good photo.
I had no idea what to do, so she called out some instructions: “Bend your knees a little! Shoulders down, sweetheart! Do something with your arms…Think of the hieroglyphics!”

On a Big Rock
YEAR: 2019 (age 22)
I took this photo at a national park while sunbathing on a big rock. The water in my line of vision was a freshwater lake, but the St. Lawrence was beyond the horizon. I fell asleep at one point, and when I woke up, the water levels were lower. Throughout that afternoon, time flowed slower – it seemed measured by the tide, not by the hour.
Last Day of School (but not Really)
YEAR: 2019 (age 23)
After finishing our final papers of the winter semester, my friend Diyora and I decided to take some pictures. We’d been spending a series of late nights and all-nighters at the library to the point that day and night started getting mixed up. Needless to say, being done with school was a cause to celebrate.
Since it was the end of fourth year and we weren’t graduating, we decided to take pictures in front of the Arts Building, the standard photo spot for all McGill graduates. đŸ˜›
Au sommet de la Montagne des Érables
YEAR: 2019 (age 22)
My friend Lena took this picture after we reached the summit of Montagne des Érables in Quebec with a few others. The hike took a few hours, but none of us had packed enough water. It was also sweltering. Strangely, when we got to the top, the exhaustion left my body and I just felt calm instead.
